Cet article part de l'expérience d'enquête de l'ethnographe pour montrer qu'il peut sans cesse être ramené à ses « origines ». Bien que biographique et individuel, cet itinéraire décrit une forme d'expérience minoritaire vécue par toute une classe de personnes, les « gars de la cité issus de l'immigration ». L'expérience minoritaire est envisagée ici sur un plan narratif, comme l'impossibilité d'échapper à l'histoire de l'immigration et de la banlieue. Tenu de répondre aux récits sur soi, l'ethnographe devient incapable de sortir de l'identité qu'on lui assigne. Ce soi encombré d'une trajectoire biographique repose sur une fiction fondatrice d'origine. Bien que né français sur le territoire métropolitain, l'ethnographe est obligé de composer avec le renvoi systématique à ses parents nés dans les anciennes colonies françaises. À rebours de la lutte pour la reconnaissance, l'article montre dans trois contextes institutionnels que l'expérience minoritaire procède d'un déni du droit de passer inaperçu. Grounded in fieldwork experience, this article shows how the ethnographer can be reduced to his « origins ». However autobiographical the kind of minority experience described in this article may be, it is nonetheless common among those who are identified as belonging to the « inner-city youth » and to putative « immigrant communities ». In narrative terms, this minority experience takes the form of an impossibility to break free from a straightforward story of immigrants and inner-city life. The ethnographer must engage with these narratives about himself, which continually shape his identity as « immigrant inner-city youth ». This encumbered self, loaded with an imaginary biographical trajectory, rests on the fiction of a legendary origin. While he was born a French citizen in metropolitan France, the ethnographer is systematically expected to relate to the history of his parents born in the former French colonies. Positioning itself poles apart from the struggle for recognition, the article describes three institutional contexts in which the minority experience is a denial of the right to civil inattention.
