Trop souvent oubliée, l'Asie du Sud est une terre de capitales nationales, mais aussi provinciales par ses États à structure fédérale. À partir du cas de la création du 29e État indien du Telangana le 2 juin 2014, nous allons observer les luttes de pouvoir, l'affrontement des représentations territoriales qui ont présidé au choix de localisation de la nouvelle capitale de l'Andhra Pradesh. Dans un premier temps, cet exemple est mis en perspective avec les évolutions géo-historiques de l'Inde sur la longue durée, ainsi que les constructions de capitales après la bifurcation de l'Uttarakhand, du Chhattisgarh et du Jharkhand en 2000. Puis l'analyse porte sur les arguments spatiaux et symboliques mis en avant par l'ensemble des acteurs, des plus locaux jusqu'au gouvernement central de New Delhi, pour emporter la décision finale en Andhra Pradesh. Too often forgotten, South Asia is a land of national capitals, but also of provincial capitals for federal States. Based on the case of the creation of the 29th Indian state, Telangana, on June 2nd 2014, we will observe the power struggles, the clash of territorial representations that led to the choice of the location of the new capital of Andhra Pradesh. First, this example is contextualized within the geo-historical development of India in the long term, as well as the construction of capitals after the bifurcation of Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand in 2000. Then, the analysis focuses on spatial and symbolic arguments promoted by all stakeholders, from the most locals to the central government in New Delhi in order to make the final decision in Andhra Pradesh.
