Les révolutions américaine et française et les discussions transatlantiques sur les constitutions des États-Unis ont donné une plus grande visibilité en France aux Œuvres politiques de Harrington, qui sont traduites par le juriste Pierre-François Henry en l'an III. Comment expliquer qu'Oceana qui passe pour avoir été l'ouvrage républicain le plus profond de la période du Commonwealth ne soit traduit qu'à la toute fin de la Convention ? Que peut nous apprendre la personnalité du traducteur sur la nature de son projet de transmettre les textes de l'auteur anglais ? On verra comment une recherche sur l'itinéraire intellectuel de Pierre-François Henry et sur sa présentation des Œuvres politiques peut éclairer le mode de transfert des ressources conceptuelles de la pensée de Harrington au XVIIIe siècle et l'évolution des idées politiques dans le contexte de leur réception sous la Révolution. The American and French Revolutions and the transatlantic discussions about the constitutions of the United States afforded a wider attention in France to the political works of Harrington, which were translated by the jurist Pierre-Francois Henry in the Year III. Why is it that Oceana, considered as the most profound republican work of the period of the Commonweath, was only translated at the very end of the Convention ? What can the personality of the translator reveal about the nature of his project to transmit the texts of this English writer ? Research about the intellectual itinerary of Pierre-Francois Henry and his presentation of the political work of Harrington can shed light on the means of transferring the conceptual resources in the thinking of Harrington in the eighteenth century and the evolution of political ideas in the context of their reception under the Revolution.
