La fidélité à Thomas d'Aquin ne tient pas dans sa lettre seulement, mais aussi dans son esprit. Relues à la lumière du concept moderne de « finitude », les premières questions de la Somme de théologie acquièrent un autre et nouveau sens. La « limite » en théologie rejoint la « finitude » en phénoménologie en cela que nous sommes hommes, et sommes appelés à le demeurer de bout en bout pour l'Aquinate. Simple constat d'un côté (phénoménologie), la finitude devient appel et vocation de l'autre (théologie). Originalement, et pour notre temps cette fois, nous apprendrons donc de Thomas d'Aquin à respecter et à aimer la « limite » dans laquelle nous sommes créés, seule réponse, s'il en est, à une possible actualité de la pensée thomasienne pour aujourd'hui. Theological limit and phenomenological finitude in Thomas Aquinas Fidelity to Thomas Aquinas means being faithful not simply to the letter, but to the spirit of his theology. If we re-read the first questions in the Summa Theologica in the light of the modern concept of « finitude », they take on a new and different meaning. The idea of « limit » in theology is similar to that of « finitude » in phenomenology to the extent that, for Aquinas, we are human beings, and are called to remain so from start to finish. A mere observation in phenomenology, finitude becomes a summons and a call in theology. In an original and highly contemporary way, we therefore learn from Thomas Aquinas to respect and love the « limit » with which we are created – the one response, if there is one, to the question of the contemporary significance of Thomas' thought for us today.
