Résumé anglais Broker of the virtual : the controversial access to on-line medical information in Mali Telemedicine is at the core of international discourses related to health in developing countries. However, there are few evidence of Internet access by health staff in these countries and knowledge on its social uses is scarce. Based on the results of a qualitative research we conducted in 2007, this paper describes the social uses of telemedicine in Mali. It argues that the hierarchy within the health staff structures the social uses of Internet. Challenging the ideal of transparency of Internet, the paper shows the emergence of a new actor – the “ broker of the virtual”– mediating the relation between Internet and health professionals. Hence, the power dimension – inscribed in the social relations within the health staff– is a key element for the understanding of the actual uses of telemedicine.
