Cet article a pour objectif d'étudier la place qu'occupent les phrases moyennes au sein du système diathétique du vietnamien, langue isolante de l'Asie du Sud-Est. Nous présentons un ensemble d'observations empiriques afin d'étayer l'hypothèse que le moyen constitue une catégorie intermédiaire, tant du point de vue syntaxique que sémantique, entre les diathèses active et passive. Il consiste en une forme verbale non marquée résultant, dans les cas canoniques, de la suppression du rôle thématique d'Agent d'un verbe transitif et de la promotion du rôle de Patient à la position de sujet syntaxique. Nous étendons la discussion aux cas où le sujet de la phrase moyenne n'est pas un Patient mais un Instrument ou un Locatif. Nous montrons, au vu des données du vietnamien, que l'étude du moyen ne devrait pas se limiter aux constructions comportant un verbe transitif mais pourrait inclure celles dont le noyau prédicatif est un verbe intransitif de base. Middle diathesis in an isolating language: the case of Vietnamese. The aim of this article is to study middle sentences in the diathetical system of Vietnamese, an isolating language of Southeast Asia. We present a set of empirical evidence to support the hypothesis that the middle is, from both syntactic and semantic perspectives, an intermediate category between the active and the passive diatheses. It consists of an unmarked verb form obtained, in the canonical case, by removing the thematic role of Agent of a transitive verb and promoting the role of Patient to the position of syntactic subject. We extend the discussion to cases in which the subject of the middle sentence is not a Patient but an Instrument or a Locative. Based on the data of Vietnamese, we show that the study of the middle should not be limited to transitive constructions but could also include those of which the predicative core is an intransitive verb.
