Dans la littérature anglophone, la notion d'“agency” des enfants constitue le mot d'ordre initial d'un domaine de recherche, les “childhood studies”, développé au tournant des années 1970 et marqué par une orientation des travaux sur l'enfance vers les sciences sociales. L'auteur, optant pour une approche pragmatique de ces notions, analyse leurs diverses acceptions et les critiques générales adressées à ce courant très contesté, tant pour ses usages sociaux que ses présupposés théoriques et idéologiques. Cet examen des débats théoriques sur l'agency des enfants est essentiel pour comprendre les rapports entre l'investigation scientifique et le projet politique d'une transformation du statut des enfants, affirmés comme des acteurs sociaux à part entière. L'intérêt d'analyser ces concepts est d'inviter à penser de façon relationnelle des catégories d'âge, d'interroger leurs enjeux anthropologiques et les manières de distinguer projet scientifique et projet politique d'émancipation des petits en insistant sur la réflexivité critique du chercheur. Les définitions d'une humanité partagée entre petits et grands et la dimension politique et morale de leurs rapports deviennent un enjeu fort de recherche touchant les questions de la représentation des enfants, de la dimension politique de leur reconnaissance et des conceptions de la personne. In English-speaking publications, the notion of the “agency” of children constitutes the initial watchword of a field of research, “childhood studies”, which was developed in the 1970s and is marked by orientating works on childhood towards the social sciences. The author, opts for a pragmatic approach with regard to these notions and analyses their diverse acceptations and the general criticism addressed against this highly-contested current, as much for its social uses as for its theoretical and ideological presuppositions. This examination of the theoretical debates around the agency of children is of vital importance in understanding the relations between the scientific investigation and the political project of a transformation of the status of children, affirmed as social actors in their own right. The interest in analysing these concepts is that it invites one to think in a relational manner about age categories, to question their anthropological stakes and the ways of distinguishing the scientific project and the political project from the emancipation of children by insisting on the critical reflexivity of researchers. The definitions of a humanity shared between children and adults and the political and moral dimension of their relations is a strong research challenge which touches on the issues of the representation of children, the political dimension of their recognition and the conceptions of the person.
