Accepting the premise that the scientific understanding of culturally defined abnormal behavior requires an exploration of indigenous nosological beliefs no less than a clinical diagnosis of its psychopathological symptoms, this paper investigates a syndrome of abnormal behavior among the Jalé people in the highlands of West New Guinea. An ethnological analysis of the social context in which afflicted persons exhibit their behavior com- plements the description of Jalé etiological theory and leads to the discovery of specific cultural factors involved in the genesis of the syndrome.
