L'analyse de quatre focus groups (jeunes majeurs et adultes) nous apprend que le groupe ethnique majoritaire ne s'identifie pas au quartier et a des attitudes vis-à-vis de la police (ATP) positives. Dans les minorités ethniques, les ATP s'appuient sur l'idée d'un conflit collectif. Cependant, la construction des attitudes diffère entre jeunes et adultes. La forte identification à « la cité » est centrale pour les jeunes : elle se combine à une identité ethnique pour produire une image de la police comme adversaire. Pour les adultes, le rapport à la police produit une identification au quartier, qui ne survient pas sans cet aiguillon. Ces résultats soulignent le rôle de la police dans la production de l'ethnicité, qui participe de la construction d'un « nous, minorités de banlieue », d'une identité ethno-territoriale. Police and identity phenomena in the suburbs: between ethnicity and territory The analysis of four focus groups (young adults and adults) teaches us that the majority group does not identify with the neighborhood and holds positive attitudes toward the police (ATP). Among ethnic minorities, ATP are based on a collective conflict. However, attitudes construction differs between youth and adults. Strong identification with “the hood” is key to young people since it combines with a sense of ethnic identity and engenders an adversarial image of police. For adults, referring to police produces identification with the neighborhood, which wouldn't happen without that spur. These findings underline the role of the relationship with police in the production of ethnicity in France : it contributes to the construction of the in group “minorities of the suburbs”, of an ethnic-territorial identity.
