Consul-missionnaire britannique dans les îles de la Société, George Pritchard (1796-1883) a rédigé un mémoire partisan sur les « agissements » français à Tahiti de 1836 à 1844, date de son incarcération et de son expulsion de l'île. Retrouvé à la Turnbull Library de Wellington, ces pages inédites viennent d'être publiées avec annotations par Paul De Deckker aux Presses Universitaires d'Auckland- Oxford. Après un rappel de la succession des faits qui forment « l'Affaire Pritchard », il en examine les tenants et les aboutissants ainsi que les rôles de ses divers protagonistes. George Pritchard (1796-1883) was a London Missionary Society worker and British Consul in the Society Islands. He wrote a partisan account of the "Aggressions of the French" in Tahiti, covering the period 1836 to 1844, the year in which he was imprisoned and then expelled. This manuscript was found in the Turnbull Library of Wellington, New Zealand, and edited by Paul De Deckker for Auckland-Oxford University Press. Recalling the successive events which are known today as the "Pritchard Affair", the editor examines here its dimension as well as the role of its diverses participants.
