Les visions — ici médiévales — de l 'Axe du Monde, sous l'une de ses multiples apparences, manifestent la réintégration du Centre, le rétablissement de relations entre Ciel et Terre, rétablissement de relations entre états, temps et espaces différents. L'Axe du Monde, symbole ou métaphore, est ici doté de valorisations spécifiquement chrétiennes (Croix ; Axe/Verbe), dont certaines se superposent à des données préchrétiennes (culte des saints /culte des arbres; archétype biblique de l'échelle de Jacob), ce qui aboutit au paradoxe suivant : la destruction d'Irminsul, colonne de l'Univers, s'accompagne du culte du saint, assimilé à une colonne. Mediaeval Visions of the Axis of Universe The visions — here mediaeval — of the Axis of Universe in one of its many forms, attest to the recapture of the Centre, the restoration of connections between Heaven and Earth, and the drawing up of connections between different states, times and spaces. The Axis of Universe, as symbol or metaphor, is here endowed with specifically Christian valorisations (Cross ; Axis/ Word), some of which being superimposed on pre-christian elements (cult of the saints /cult of the trees ; biblical archetype of Jacob's ladder), all of which results in the following paradox : the pulling down of Irminsul, the column of the Universe, coincides with the worship of the saint equated with a column.
