La parution du premier volume d'une traduction française du "Midrach Rabba" nous donne l'occasion de réfléchir au caractère général de ce texte classique du judaïsme et de nous demander comment il convient de l'aborder de nos jours. Nous esquissons plusieurs approches possibles. Une approche véritablement critique doit reconnaître à chaque midrach sa particularité ; elle doit reconnaître également que, loin d'être une compilation machinale de traditions antérieures, un midrach est l'œuvre d'un auteur qui vit dans un milieu particulier. Même si les rabbinistes exploitent les midrachim pour en dégager les traditions qui y sont conservées, il faut se rappeler qu'en réalité ce sont des œuvres byzantines, qui traduisent bien des préoccupations de leur milieu. Midrash and Byzantium : A French translation of the « Midrash Rabba » The appearance of the first volume of a French translation of the "Midrash Rabba" provides an opportunity for reflection on the general character of this classical Jewish text, and on the way it should be approached today. Several possible approaches are outlined. A truly critical approach should recognise the particular character of each individual midrash, and should also recognise that a midrash is not merely a mechanical compilation of earlier material but the work of an author living ai a specific time and place. The fad that the midrashim are commonly quarried by students of rabbinics should not blind us to the fact that they are actually Byzantine works, betraying many specifically Byzantine preoccupations.
