| Résumé |
Le fédéralisme a été le premier paradigme historiographique utilisé pour analyser
le processus d'intégration européenne, et ce, avec un certain succès à partir
des années 1970. En dépit de cette domination initiale sur l'historiographie, il
est devenu marginal lorsque ce nouveau champ de recherche historiographique
s'est vu inclus dans la recherche portée par les chercheurs venant de l'histoire
des relations internationales et de l'histoire économique et sociale ensuite.
Ayant servi de récit mobilisateur des fédéralistes à l'intérieur et l'extérieur des
institutions européennes et fort d'un certain appui institutionnel, le fédéralisme
a limité sa crédibilité en tant qu'école historiographique, en dépit du fait qu'un
nombre non négligeable de ses thèses et de ses conclusions ait été confirmé
par les dernières recherches en cours. Cet article cherchera à expliquer ce
paradoxe à l'aide d'un aperçu sur l'évolution récente de l'historiographie de

From the 1970s, federalism was the earliest historiographical paradigm used to analyse the process of european integration. In spite of this initial success, it became increasingly marginalised in the expanding historiography of this booming field of historical research. This was, to a large extent, due to the increasing domination in this field by researchers coming from the history of international relations and social and economic history. Having been used as a powerful narrative within and outside european institutions, federalist historiography lost momentum. Such a loss of centrality took place in spite of enjoying institutional support, and although some its hypothèses and conclusions had been confirmed by some of the most recent research. This article aims to explain such a paradox through an overview about the relevance of the federal principle in the context of the recent evolution of the historiography of european integration.
