Le 27 septembre 1608, la Congrégation des Rites étend à l'Église universelle la célébration du culte de l'ange gardien par l'inscription d'un office propre dans le bréviaire romain. Ce décret est à l'origine de l'épanouissement de la dévotion dans l'ensemble de l'Europe catholique. Il stimule notamment l'écriture d'ouvrages de dévotion et de spiritualité. Pour comprendre la place de cette figure au sein de la culture religieuse catholique, on la situe dans le cadre des évolutions de la théologie, en particulier dans son travail d'éclaircissement des rapports entre grâce et libre arbitre, et à l'intérieur de certaines pratiques spirituelles propres à la Compagnie de Jésus. On September 27, 1608, the Congregation of Rites extended to the Universal Church the worship of the guardian angel by inserting a specific office for this celebration into the Roman breviary. The decree led to the spread of this devotion across Catholic Europe. It especially stimulated devotional and spiritual writing. In order to understand the place of this figure within Catholic religious culture, the article situates it within the framework of an evolving theology, and in particular in its role of clarifying the relationship between grace and free will, and within certain spiritual practices specific to the Society of Jesus.
