Partant de l'hypothèse selon laquelle la présence d'un adjectif épithète, en français, est un des facteurs susceptibles d'influer sur la valeur appréciative d'un SN, nous montrons comment la valeur intensive d'un adjectif prend en contexte une valeur argumentative qui consiste à renforcer (de nets progrès), atténuer (un léger retard) ou inverser (une bien maigre consolation) l'orientation axiologique intrinsèque du substantif sur lequel il porte. Dans cette perspective, le fonctionnement de l'adverbe oppositif néanmoins a servi de critère pour déterminer les différents facteurs susceptibles d'influer sur la force évaluative du SN. In this paper, it is hypothesized that, in French, the presence of an attributive adjective influences the appreciative value of the noun phrase. We attempt to show that an adjective with an intensive value in premodifying position has a special role in structuring argumentation in discourse. The adjective can intensify (de nets progrès), weaken (un léger retard) or reverse (une bien maigre consolation) the axiological orientation of the noun phrase in context. In this perspective, the function of the oppositive adverb néanmoins can serve as a test for determining the different factors which influence the axiological value of the noun phrase.
