The introduction of this special issue provides a state of the art of the studies of the French manner WH word comment ‘how' and presents a survey of the large variety of uses of this polyfunctional item. Its uses in questions concern not only manner, quality and means, but also degree, quantity, results, ways of saying or the possibility of an event. Comment is also used in constructions typical for WH words (concessive, relative and exclamative uses). The notion of WH word is however insufficient to account for all uses of the item, so further investigation is needed. Source : Éditeur (via Cairn.info) |
