La comparaison entre les langues romanes révèle une intéressante dissymétrie entre les langues qui utilisent le même mot pour l'expression du subordonnant « comme » et de l'adverbe interrogatif « comment » et le français qui prend soin de distinguer les deux fonctions à travers l'emploi de comment, clairement distinct de celui de comme. Cette dissymétrie vient s'ajouter à la liste des divergences entre le français et les langues de la Romania continua, et mérite d'être examinée dans une perspective diachronique, afin de tenter de dégager les implications structurelles de la spécificité française sur ce point précis de la non-correspondance entre l'expression de « comment » et de « comme ». Pour ce faire, l'auteur combine les axes diachronique (du latin archaïque au français moderne), comparatiste (latin par rapport aux autres langues indo-européennes ; latin tardif à travers ses diverses spécifications ; ancien français par rapport aux autres langues romanes attestées au Moyen Age ; français moderne par rapport aux autres langues romanes modernes) et typologique (certaines langues, par exemple l'arménien, exprime « comment » par la combinaison de « comme » et de « quoi ? »). The comparison between various Romance languages reveals an interesting dissymmetry between the languages that use the same word for the subordinating word ‘like' and the interrogative adverb ‘how?' and French, which makes a distinction between the two functions using a special word (comment) to express the modal question ‘how?' This dissymmetry, which is only one of the numerous divergences between French and the languages of the Romania continua, is worth to be investigated in a diachronic perspective. This paper aims to analyze the relationship between French comment and comme taking into consideration several states of language from Archaic Latin to Modern French, in order to describe the structural implications of the distinction between comme and comment in French. The approach combines a diachronic survey and a comparative approach, taking into consideration the interface between Latin and other Indo-European languages ; the various ramifications of common Romance; Old French as compared to other medieval Romance languages and Modern French vs. other Modern Romance languages. This survey of genetically related languages leads to typological considerations on the relationship between ‘how?' and ‘like'.
