Cet article retrace l'évolution de divers, du moyen français au français contemporain, sur la base d'un corpus constitué des occurrences de divers(es) dans la BFM et celles des genres indexés « correspondance » et « récit de voyage » dans Frantext. On distingue ainsi trois phases dans l'évolution de divers : une première phase, qui englobe les XIVe et XVIe s. où divers connaît sa plus grande latitude syntaxique, voire une instabilité catégorielle, et se montre sous son jour le plus polysémique. Dans une seconde période, qui va du XVIe au XVIIIe s., les emplois au singulier disparaissent et divers s'antépose au N, avec une prédisposition pour des N induisant une lecture « typante » du SN. Durant la dernière période, du XICe s. à nos jours, on assiste au retour d'emplois adjectivaux post-nominaux, ce qui fait que divers donne lieu à deux emplois nettement distincts : l'un grammaticalisé où il fait office de déterminant, l'autre où son rôle d'adjectif est très contraint, notamment par des expressions figées.

This article traces the evolution of divers `various', from Middle French until contemporary French, on the basis of two corpora: the Medieval French Corpus (BFM) and the Frantext corpus (only travelogues and letters have been considered in the latter corpus). Three evolutionary stages can be distinguished. From the 14th to the 16th C., divers is characterized by a high degree of syntactic flexibility and is even categorically instable. Moreover, it is highly polysemous. In the second period, from the 16th to the 18th C., divers is no longer used in the singular and occupies the prenominal position. It shows a propensity for nouns entailing a typifying interpretation of the NP. During the last period, from the 19th C. on, there is a comeback of divers in postnominal position. As a result, divers develops two distinct uses: on the one hand, it grammaticalizes into a determiner; on the other hand, it is used as an adjective, but this use is highly constrained and occurs for instance in idioms.
