Les intellectuels médiatiques sont-ils les continuateurs des intellectuels dreyfusards ou les trahissent-ils ? On conviendra qu'ils en sont fortement éloignés. Cette question renvoie à une autre : quelles strates successives d'expériences réflexives et pratiques ont-elles rendu possibles la formation d'un mouvement et sa dénomination comme « intellectuel », comment, sous le même nom, émergent des courants qui divergent de l'orientation initiale, comment l'appréhension de l'historien est elle-même infléchie par ce qui vient après le moment circonscrit qu'il étudie ? People who claim in mass-media to be genuine successors of the intellectuals of the Dreyfus affair are they what they pretend to be? In this paper it is suggested to shift the emphasis from a normative point of view to the experience lived by those personalities who, at the end of the nineteenth century, were named “intellectuels”. The real background of this movement was the affirmation of human temporality by the French “Lumières” and the German “Aufklärung”: later the renewal was ambiguous, limited and lasted a short time. To day the human temporality appears to have falled into oblivion. The equivocal meaning of the terme “intellectuel” is disclosed with the aid of historical semantics.
