The paper falls into three parts: firstly, an overview of the geography of the elderly in Northern Ireland is presented; secondly, a more detailed discussion of the position in the city of Belfast is developed; and thirdly, the paper concludes with a projection of the elderly population of Northern Ireland up to the year 201 1 .
