On analyse ici le rapport des « catholiques de gauche » à leur Église, en France, entre 1962 et 1978. L'appartenance de la plupart de ces militants à la petite bourgeoisie nouvelle ou à la « petite bourgeoisie intellectuelle » fournit le point de départ de l'interprétation. Après avoir expliqué les raisons de parler de classes sociales dans un tel sujet, et décrit les pratiques de ces catholiques, on compare ces militants avec des catholiques ancrés dans le mouvement ouvrier traditionnel, qui manifestent un rapport très différent au catholicisme. L'article conclut par des réflexions sur le cadre d'analyse sociologique d'un objet devenu historique, mais aussi sur ce qu'il permet de comprendre à l'actualité du catholicisme en France. The relationship between ‘Left Catholics' and their Church in France between 1962 and 1978 will be at the center of this contribution. The point of departure for the ensuing analysis will be the location – sociologically speaking - of the majority of the targeted activists within the new middle classes or the ‘intellectual middle classes'. After explaining the rationale for this recourse to the language of ‘social classes' in this particular context, the daily routines of these Catholics will be described, then comparing this activist milieu with those Catholics rooted in the traditional labor movement, who incorporated a rather different approach to Catholicism. The article concludes with some reflections on the role of sociological analysis for the comprehension of a topic which has since become a historical object, and on the potential contributions of such a study towards the understanding of the nature of Catholicism in France today.
