Ayant constaté que « The Unfortunate Happy Lady » a été jusqu'à présent très peu étudié, on analysera comment l'héroïne Philadelphia rompt les conventions sociales de façon graduelle en se révoltant contre sa situation tragique. Philadelphia dévoile finalement l'identité de son mari mais avant d'arriver à ce moment heureux, la « malchanceuse heureuse dame » agit d'après les mœurs traditionnelles en contractant un mariage orchestré par d'autres. On étudiera différents épisodes montrant le rôle actif de l'héroïne, et son évolution de l'oppression exercée par une figure autoritaire masculine, jusqu'à la rédemption et la liberté, en présentant Philadelphia comme une femme résolue, indépendante et capable de garder intactes sa vertu et sa morale. On analysera également l'emploi de l'ironie introduite par l'auteur. On constatera également l'influence de la tradition littéraire, à travers l'empreinte laissée par un poème de Ben Jonson dans un épisode clé de la narration. Source : Éditeur (via Cairn.info) |

Having first established that “The Unfortunate Happy Lady: A True History” has been subject to very little critical analysis, this article discusses how the protagonist, Philadelphia, breaks the conventions of society in incremental steps, through rebelling against the situation in which she finds herself. Philadelphia ultimately decides who she will marry; however, before reaching this peak moment the “unfortunate happy lady” follows traditional customs, contracting a marriage orchestrated by other people. Several episodes of female agency will be explored, following the evolution of the protagonist from oppression by a male authority figure towards redemption, presenting Philadelphia as an independent and decisive woman, capable of maintaining her virtue and her moral integrity. The article will examine the writer's use of irony. Literary influences on the text will also be examined, such as the parallel between a poem by Ben Jonson and a key episode in the narrative.
