Cet article part du concept de « cas » pour montrer son intérêt pour une analyse du recueil de Rudyard Kipling, Plain Tales from the Hills. Il s'appuie sur une lecture précise de la nouvelle « The Bronckhorst Divorce-Case », en s'interrogeant sur le sens du mot « cas ». Après un détour historique visant à expliciter les acceptions du terme, et en s'appuyant en particulier sur l'ouvrage d'André Jolles, Formes simples, l'analyse montre que l'approche par le cas permet de construire la nouvelle, et pour finir, le recueil tout entier. This article starts from the concept of “case” in order to analyse Kipling's collection of short stories, Plain Tales from the Hills. Specifically, it offers a precise reading of the short story “The Bronckhorst Divorce-Case”, questioning the plurality of meanings attached to the word case. After a historical analysis whose aim is to detail the different meanings of the word, and through a reading of André Jolles's book, Einfache Formen, the essay aims at showing how the concept of case enables a construction of the short story, and ultimately, of the collection as a whole.
