Dans l'Inde ancienne comme dans l'Inde contemporaine, la notion de cycle de renaissances (saṃsāra) est étroitement liée à l'idée de karma (karman, « acte »). Cette étude s'intéresse à un aspect peu connu de la théorie du karma, la réminiscence des vies antérieures en tant qu'exercice de connaissance réservé à des spécialistes et permettant d'atteindre certains buts thérapeutiques ou sotériologiques. Suivant un cheminement à rebours qui part des pratiques contemporaines de karmic healing observées dans une métropole indienne, on présente un aperçu de la Karmavipākasaṃhitā, traité astrologique du xviiie siècle, ainsi que des matériaux védiques où la vision des vies antérieures apparaît comme l'expression d'une perfection (siddhi) ascétique. In ancient as well as in contemporary India, the concept of the cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra) is closely related to the concept of karma (action). The authors explore an aspect of the theory of Karma that is quite unknown: the reminiscence of former lives as a way for specialists to increase their knowledge and to achieve certain therapeutic or soteriological goals. Following a backward movement that starts with contemporary karmic healing practices in an Indian metropolis, the article gives an overview of the Karmavipākasaṃhitā, an astrological treaty written in the 18th century, as well as of Vedic material in which the vision of past lives appears as the expression of ascetic perfection (siddhi).
