Au lendemain de la chute de Juan Peron en 1955, l'Argentine s'est intégrée au processus d'internationalisation qui avait remodelé le paysage politique et économique de l'Amérique latine au cours de la décennie précédente. La « modernisation » et le « développement » devinrent les slogans d'un nouveau monde placé sous hégémonie américaine. L'article analyse l'une des principales dimensions de ce processus marqué par la convergence des transformations profondes que connaissent la bureaucratie d'État, l'économie nationale et les représentations savantes de la société. Il porte sur une institution qui a joué un rôle de premier plan dans le renouvellement des sciences sociales et dans la formation d'une élite d'État technicienne au cours des années 1960 : l'Instituto Torcuato Di Tella. En retraçant l'histoire de cette institution et la trajectoire sociale de ses membres et chercheurs de la première heure, il montre que la visibilité dont bénéficie ce personnel est étroitement liée à sa capacité à accumuler du prestige et du pouvoir dans plusieurs champs simultanément (universitaire, économique, et bureaucratique), tant au niveau national qu'international. Converti en université prestigieuse, l'Institut Di Tella est parvenu au cours des années 1990 à maintenir une position importante dans le champ des économistes, contribuant ainsi (avec d'autres think tanks « néo-libéraux ») à déterminer la crise que l'Argentine traverse actuellement. After the fall of Juan Peron in 1955, Argentina became integrated into the process of internationalization that had transformed the political and economic landscape of Latin America in the previous decade. “Modernization” and “development” became new buzz-words in this new world placed under the hegemony of the United States. The present article studies a central dimension of this process, marked by the confluence of the deep transformations affecting the state bureaucracy, the national economy and the knowledge about society. The article focuses on an institution that played a central role in the renewal of the social sciences and in the formation of a technical state élite during the 1960s : the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella. It traces the history of this institution and the social trajectory of its early members and researchers, showing that their visibility was related to their ability to accumulate simultaneously prestige and power in several fields (academic, economical, and bureaucratic), both at the national and international level. Transformed into a prestigious university in the 90's, the Di Tella maintained its relevance in the field of economics, thus contributing to shape (along with other “neoliberal” think-tanks) the critical situation that Argentine society is currently undergoing.
