Depuis le changement de régime de 1989, la science historique hongroise s'est libérée des schémas prévalant depuis 1945. La liste des sujets interdits ou lourdement idéologisés comportait entre autres la période de l'entre-deux-guerres, l'Holocauste, la soviétisation de la Hongrie et, bien évidemment, la révolution de 1956. Le panorama institutionnel a évolué grâce aux nouvelles universités et aux nouveaux instituts, mais la libéralisation a également permis la création de structures contestables. Un exemple de ces contradictions est l'interprétation du régime Horthy qui reflète la polarisation de la ie politique. Since the change of regime in 1989, Hungarian historical scholarship has freed itself from the principles that prevailed in the post-war years. Among other things, the list of forbidden or highly indeologized subjects included the Holocaust, the sovietization of Hungary and, of course, the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Thanks to the emergence of new universities and new institutes, the institutional landscape evolved but liberalization also laid the groundwork for the emergence of more questionable structures. An example of these contradictions reflecting the polarization of political life can be found in the interpretation of the Horthy regime.
