Profondément ancré en Basse-Andalousie et nourri d'identité gitane, le flamenco séduit des étrangers du monde entier qui se pressent à Jerez de la Frontera pour bénéficier de l'enseignement de maestros locaux. Fondé sur une enquête ethnographique, cet article analyse les raisons qui rendent compte de cet engouement pour une pratique d'initiés codifiée et en apparence très hermétique. Il porte également sur la façon dont les dépositaires traditionnels de la culture flamenca réagissent à la volonté d'étrangers de se l'approprier jusqu'à vouloir faire oublier qu'ils sont « d'ailleurs ». Flamenco dance and music are deeply rooted in a target region, Lower Andalusia, and in a traditional culture, the Gipsy one. Despite this strong local identity, Flamenco keeps fascinating and attracting foreigners, converging from all around the world toward Jerez de la Frontera, one of the most famous birthplaces of this art, to unveil local maestros knowledge. This article, based on an ethnographic investigation, analyses the reasons why such a highly codified and arcane practice, designed – at least in appearance, for insiders only, can raise such a wide, international fondness. The article also studies how flamenco culture's local keepers deal with the will of these foreign aficionados to appropriate their heritage, up to the wish of wiping off the fact that they are not “from the land”. The internationalisation trend of flamenco culture is a crucial study-case to interrogate the circulation, receiving, transformation and plasticity of artistic patterns.
