Le XVIIe siècle voit en France se consolider la structure absolutiste du pouvoir dont R. Koselleck a montré qu'elle repose sur la scission du public et du particulier. Les Belles Lettres, activité publique du particulier, se trouvent en position de perturber ce partage rationnel : en publiant le particulier, en projetant le public dans des représentations variées, l'activité 'littéraire» se détache et de la sphère privée et de la sphère publique mais de façon contemporaine à leur scission même, c'est-à-dire en l'accompagnant et en la travaillant, pour produire une figure du public qui tient à la fois de la nouvelle configuration socio-politique et de l'ancien modèle du corps politique. Public discourse and forms of the public in France during the first part of the 17th Century.

During the 17th Century, the absolutist structure of the power is consolidated in France, and, according to R. Koselleck, this structure is based on the dissociation between the public and the private. Les Belles Lettres, a public activity of the private, is in a position to break this rational division of things : by publishing the private and by projecting the public into a number of representations, the «literary- activity separates itself from the private and the public sphere but at the very moment when these two spheres are dissociated : the literary activity accompanies and help this dissociation, producing a form of the public which is both part of this new socio-political configuration and of the old model of the political body.
