	Résumé	La science et le laboratoire. Place de l'expérimentation dans la genèse de la psychologie américaine. Geneviève Paicheler [123-140]. En interrogeant la place de l'expérimentation dans l'émergence de la psychologie nord-américaine à la fin du XIXe siècle, notre but est de mettre en évidence la fonction rhétorique de cette forme d'instrumentation. L'existence d'une science véritable se fonde sur celle de laboratoires, d'instruments de mesure et d'expériences, censés illustrer le renouveau épistémologique opéré par la «nouvelle psychologie». L'analyse des carrières des précurseurs et leur façon d'utiliser, puis d'abandonner l'expérimentation, confirme que cette méthode se développe en premier lieu dans un but de légitimation universitaire et sociale de la psychologie. 	Résumé anglais	Science and the laboratory. The place of experimentation In the genesis of American psychology. Geneviève Paicheler [123-140]. The questionning of the place of experimentation in the emergence of North-American psychology at the end of the XIXth century is aimed to shed light on the rhetorical function of this form of instrumentation. The existence of a genuine science is based on the existence of laboratories, measure instruments and experiments, all supposed to illustrate the epistemological renewal done by the «new psychology». The analysis of the careers of the precursors and the way they used, and then gave up, experimentation, brings confirmation to the fact that this method evolved first in the aim of academic and social legitimation of psychology.
