Cet article s'efforce de restituer, sur la longue durée, pour la ville de Rome, les modalités selon lesquelles les différentes couches de la société urbaine se rendaient au théâtre. Sont d'abord examinés les lieux des représentations théâtrales, principalement les cirques, et leur signification topographique, puis la construction de bâtiments pérennes avec le concept nouveau introduit par le complexe de Pompée au Champ de Mars. Les rapports entre le théâtre et les cérémoniaux, ou encore la viabilité sacrée de Rome à proximité et à l'intérieur des édifices, sont enfin abordés. Going to, around, and through the ancient theatres of Rome. Between architecture, accessibility and ceremonials. This article endeavours to reconstitute, over the long term, the ways in which the various levels of urban society went to the theatre in Rome. We begin by examining the venues for theatrical representations, mainly circuses, and their topographical signification. Then we look at the construction of permanent buildings with the new concept introduced by Pompey's Campus Martius. Lastly, we turn our sights to the relationship between theatre and ceremonials, or even the sacred routes of Rome within and around these edifices.
