Les trolls sont-ils incompétents ? Enquête sur les financiers amateurs Vincent-Antonin Lepinay, Fabrice Rousseau Le récent développement de sites Internet d'accès direct aux marchés financiers, qui semble connaître un certain succès, s'accompagne de l'apparition en bourse d'actionnaires apparemment étrangers aux « logiques financières ». Autant attachés à des exigences morales ou politiques qu'au profit monétaire, ces traders amateurs présentent des représentations particulièrement hétérodoxes de la finance et de son fonctionnement. A partir de quelques cas exemplaires, cet article tente de décrire la mise en œuvre d'activités financières de marché par ces amateurs dépourvus des compétences institutionnelles standard. Confrontés à la diversité des agents économiques qui leur sont accessibles, ils ont développé des stratégies cognitives originales qui articulent des moments de recensement et d'exploration auquel ce papier s'intéresse tout particulièrement. Pratiquant l'achat et la vente de titres non seulement pour réaliser des profits, mais également pour tenter de comprendre les dynamiques économiques et financières, ces financiers amateurs - autrement nommés traders-on-line ou trolls - paraissent au final pourvus de compétences comparables à celles des professionnels. Are the Trolls Incompetent ? Inquiry into the Financiers Amateurs Vincent-Antonin Lepinay, Fabrice Rousseau The recent booming development of Internet Sites allowing for a direct access to the financial markets goes with the related emergence of stakeholders seemingly ignorant of « financial logic ». Sticking to moral or political exigencies as much as to the monetary return, these amateur traders display very heterodox representations of finance and of its working. Drawing from some exemplary cases, this article makes an attempt at describing the enactment of financial practices by these amateurs devoid of the usual institutional competencies. Having to face the variety of the economic beings within their reach, they have devised original cognitive strategies that articulate periods of census and of exploration. This is the main object of this article. Buying and selling stocks, not only for making profit but also as an attempt to understand the economic and financial dynamics, these financier amateur — also dubbed traders-on-line or trolls — eventually look comparable to the professional ones.
