Oran située à l'ouest de l'Algérie et seconde ville du pays vit depuis quelques années une poussée de construction de tours d'habitations. Touchant aussi bien le logement social que le haut standing et n'épargnant ni les quartiers centraux ni la périphérie immédiate ou lointaine de la ville, la tour devient un élément presque banal du paysage urbain en pleine mutation. Héritage de la colonisation, elle a été mise en veilleuse dans les programmes de logement social jusqu'aux années 2000 où elle revient en force et s'impose comme un objet architectural et urbain quasi incontournable. Le propos ici est de révéler certains aspects de cette « verticalisation » de la ville. Après une brève présentation historique de la présence des tours à Oran, nous montrerons comment la frénésie de la construction en hauteur a complètement fragilisé un tissu urbain horizontal dont la spécificité est complètement ignorée. Justifiée par la volonté de rentabiliser un foncier considéré très cher, la construction au coup par coup de ces bâtiments sans vue d'ensemble ni plan d'aménagement a des conséquences néfastes sur le paysage de la ville et transforme la composition sociale de ses quartiers. West of Algeria and considered as the second city of the country, Oran has witnessed a residential high-rise boom since the last decade. Affecting social housing and high-end residential developments and not sparing either the central districts or the distant outskirts of the city, new residential towers have become a commonplace element of the urban landscape of this rapidly changing algerian city. Inherited from the colonization, it was put aside in the programs of social housing until the 2000s when it made a strong comeback and stood out as an inescapable architectural and urban object. The purpose of this paper is to show the aspects of this "verticalization" of the city. After a brief historic presentation of the presence of towers in Oran, We will show how the frenzy of the height construction weakened a horizontal urban form which specificity has been completely ignored. Justified by the need to make profitable developments from on site of very high land prices, the piecemeal construction of these buildings without overview or development plan lead to negative landscape impacts and, at the same time, and transforms the social composition of its districts.
