Les écrits autobiographiques du négociant en sel Enomoto Yazaemon sont des documents précieux pour connaître l'existence des marchands japonais dans le Kantō au début de la période d'Edo. Ces archives nous dépeignent un bourgeois qui bataille pour établir sa réputation et son autorité à la tête de sa « maison », une structure familiale au cœur de ses représentations du statut social et des valeurs des commerçants. Son témoignage nous livre le tableau d'une condition marchande en pleine ascension, et qui élabore son propre système de valeurs, dans un climat économique porteur, et grâce à la protection des dirigeants guerriers. The autobiographical writings of the salt merchant Enomoto Yazaemon are precious documents for knowing the way of life of Japanese merchants in Kantō at the beginning of the Edo period. These documents depict a bourgeois who is struggling to establish his reputation and authority at the head of his “house,” a family structure at the heart of his representations of the social status and values of merchants. His testimony draws us a picture of a merchant condition in full rise, which develops its own system of values, in a buoyant economic climate, and thanks to the protection of warrior leaders.
