Cet article se propose d'aborder la représentation du risque dans l'imaginaire de la montagne à travers la vision analogique du monde, puis celle du symbolisme religieux et du rationalisme, dans le but d'éclairer la perception contemporaine de ce risque «naturel ». Intégré au sein de représentations élémentaires complexes, puis associé à la nature diabolique comme l'expression de la colère divine, le risque est aujourd'hui déconnecté de son support légitime (le milieu) pour n'apparaître que profondément imbriqué à la catastrophe elle-même, postérieurement à son occurrence et toujours associé à l'idée de culpabilité préalable. L'un des enjeux de la pédagogie de l'environnement est sans doute de réintégrer ce risque dans une perception pérenne du milieu naturel, débarrassé de ses valeurs diaboliques qui viennent en perturber l'appréhension. The article attempts to throw some light onto the representation of risk in the mental images held with respect to mountain areas through a study of the analogical vision of the world, then through that of religious symbolism and rationalism, with a view to improving the understanding of the contemporary perception of these «natural» hazards. Embedded within complex elementary representations, then associated with the infernal world as the expression of divine anger, hazards have today become disconnected from their legitimate support (the environment), and only appear as something closely interrelated with the disaster itself, subsequent to its occurrence and always associated with the idea of previous guilt. One of the challenges of the pedagogy of the environment is undoubtedly to reintegrate the hazard into a lasting perception of the natural environment, purged of its infernal values which hinder its understanding.
