On assiste dans les Andes centrales à un processus de rapprochement qui diffère de la dynamique d'intégration commerciale à l'œuvre au sein du MERCOSUR. Des régions périphériques vis-à-vis des pays auxquels elles appartiennent cherchent à s'unir pour lutter contre des faiblesses communes. On explore ici les conditions de ce processus d'intégration liées au contexte historique, politique et commercial de l'évolution du sous-continent latino-américain avant d'en analyser l'impact. L'intégration passe par la multiplication des infrastructures traversantes : celles-ci contribuent-elles à gommer la montagne ou au contraire participent-elles du renouvellement du sens que l'on peut donner à ce type d'espace ? Continental integration in the peripheral areas of the MERCOSUR : the different scales of a cross-border and trans-Andean process Certain areas of the Central Andes are drawing closer together, but this process should not be assimilated with the movement toward greater trade integration, now underway in the MERCOSUR. Different regions, sharing the common characteristic of being peripheral to their respective countries, are attempting to unite to overcome their common limitations. This article explores the historical, political and commercial conditions governing the integration process in the latin American subcontinent as an antecedent to studying its impact. In this case, integration means the multiplication of trans-Andean infrastructures and raises a number of questions : Do such infrastructures help limit the disadvantages of mountain areas or, on the contrary, do they help redefine new possibilities for such areas ?
