Verdun dans l'enseignement et dans les manuels scolaires. First by an analysis of developments in teaching the First World War in the final years of secondary school stresses the continuities and changes since the 1990s. Next, treatment of the battle of Verdun in thirteen 11th-grade history textbooks published in 2003 is shown in the form of charts both quantitative (number of pages, illustrations, etc.) and qualitative (goals, presentation, assessment of the battle). Finally, classroom teaching now takes into account updated scholarly research and pedagogy. Verdun is not only an item of history ; it is also a French and European site of commemoration.
