Le jaunissement, c'est-à-dire l'introduction de soldats réguliers indochinois dans les unités du corps expéditionnaire français en Indochine, ne commença qu'en 1950 dans la Légion, alors qu'il était pratiqué dans les autres formations du corps expéditionnaire depuis la fin de 1945. Ce processus, qui provoqua de nombreuses contestations dans les rangs de la Légion, répondait au souci de trouver le plus rapidement possible des hommes à moindre coût. L'expérience fut dans l'ensemble positive, et elle montre que la Légion, souvent accusée d'être lourde et figée, était capable de s'adapter aux conditions de la guerre.
