Les rapports entre catholiques vietnamiens et Français durant la guerre d'Indochine furent fort ambigus. Le colonel puis général Gambiez eut à composer avec cette réalité très complexe en tant qu'officier de terrain pendant les hostilités, puis en tant que chargé de l'accueil des réfugiés catholiques tonkinois au Sud-Vietnam après les accords de Genève de 1954. The relationship between Vietnamese Catholics and the French during the Indochina War was quite ambiguous. Colonel (later general) Gambiez had to deal with this very complex reality as a field officer during the hostilities, and then, after the 1954 Geneva Agreements, as responsible for the Tonkinese Catholic refugees in South Vietnam.
