	Résumé	Si le pape Benoît XV ne parvint pas à convaincre du caractère impartial de son action diplomatique pendant la Grande Guerre, du moins fut-il reconnu comme le « pape des prisonniers ». Son action en faveur des prisonniers de guerre fut en effet considérable, même si elle ne fut pas toujours pleinement reconnue, essentiellement pour des raisons idéologiques et politiques, notamment en Italie à cause de la « question romaine ». L'exigence chrétienne de charité gouvernait cette action, mais il existait également une nécessité plus politique de jouer encore un rôle dans le concert des nations, alors que l'influence du Saint-Siège dans les relations internationales était en fort déclin. 	Résumé anglais	If Pope Benedict XV's diplomacy during the Great War failed to prove his impartiality, at least he was recognized as the “Pope of prisoners”. His activities in favour of prisoners of war were indeed remarkable, even if they were not fully recognized, this being due to ideological and political factors centering in Italy on the “Roman question”. His activities were governed of course by the dictates of Christian charity, but they also reflected the desire of the Vatican to revive its role in the concert of nations, at a time when the influence of the Holy See in the international relations had fallen into sharp decline.
