Entre deux grandes vagues d'exécution d'otages, celle de septembre-octobre puis décembre 1941, et celle d'août-septembre 1942 renouvelée en octobre 1943, les 251 otages exécutés entre janvier et mai 1942 sont mal connus. Leur étude met en lumière « l'imaginaire répulsif » des nazis qui visent principalement communistes et Juifs. La très fréquente dispersion des exécutions sur le territoire occupé peut être interprétée comme une tentative contradictoire du commandement militaire allemand de conserver un impact fort à ces mesures tout en tout en gardant une relative modération. Louis Poulhès, Executions of hostages in France in the first half of 1942. Between the two great waves of hostage executions, the first in September-December 1941 and the second in August-September 1942 (renewed in October 1943), the execution of 251 hostages between January and May 1942 is not well known. The image that comes to mind is reminiscent of the repulsive image of the Nazis in the special treatment they inflicted on Communists and Jews. The very frequent dispersal of the executions across the occupied territory can be interpreted as an attempt of the German military command to maintain a strong impact at the same time that it held to a relative moderation.
