Résumé anglais Teaching, researching, social intervention: exploring the possible horizons of the sociology of education in PortugalThis article presents the situation of the sociology of education in Portugal on the basis of ten interviews with specialists in the field and an analysis of the different developments of the past dozen years. The discipline was reborn into Portugal with the return of democracy. It was immediately involved in the challenges of the new regime: the goal of equality and at the same time the objectives of modernisation via the education of the new elites. This involved the development of three sectors: research, teaching and social intervention. Research was based on a theoretical requirement inherited from the French-speaking tradition whilst at the same time it participated in the major international surveys inspired by Anglo-Saxon epistemologies. Teaching faced the huge challenge of training the new generation of teachers. Social intervention attempted to give assistance in the inevitable tensions between the goals of equality and performance, to study the organisation of the education system (autonomy of academic institutions: implementation of the New Public Management; the risk of a market-orientated downward spiral, etc.) and to monitor at the same time the emergence of new issues: the reformulation of inequalities regarding discrimination, the evolution of child and youth socialisation modes, etc.
