L'émergence de technologies prothétiques toujours plus sophistiquées modifie nos représentations du corps et nourrit chez certains la croyance en la possibilité d'améliorer les capacités humaines au-delà du fonctionnement normal de l'espèce. Dans la littérature de ces dix dernières années – émanant tant des sciences dures que sociales –, la notion de prothèse s'est imposée comme un filtre heuristique incontournable pour penser les métamorphoses potentielles du corps et, plus largement, l'hybridation entre corps et artéfacts. La prothèse est alors souvent conçue comme une métaphore du devenir technologique de l'homme. La présente contribution a pour objectif de mettre en question l'idée d'« amélioration technologique », en examinant les trois principales significations généralement associées à la prothèse dans le champ des Science & Technology Studies. Sur cette base, nous ferons émerger trois figures conceptuelles et idéologiques – l'anthropos, le cyborg et le post-humain – qu'il importe de distinguer. Une telle distinction permet de faire émerger une pluralité de représentations de l'« Homme-machine », d'en saisir les soubassements ontologiques et les visées normatives. The emergence of complex prosthetic technologies changes our representations of the body and nurture people's belief in the possibility to enhance human capacities beyond species normal functioning. In the past decade, both in the fields of hard and social sciences, the notion of prosthesis became a fundamental heuristic tool to grasp the potential metamorphoses of the body and, more broadly, the hybridization of body and artifacts. The prosthesis is often conceived as a metaphor to grasp the technological destiny of humanity. In order to question the idea of technological enhancement, this article will explore the three main meanings usually associated with the notion of prosthesis in the field Science & Technology Studies. This will allow us to identify three conceptual and ideological figures – anthropos, cyborg, potshuman. These figures, we contend, need to be distinguished in order to shed light on a diversity of conceptualizations of human-artifacts relationships and their underlying normative claims.
