Observer d'autres technologies fin de siècle, comme la TSF constitue un détour fécond pour repérer les véritables éléments de nouveauté d'Internet et pouvoir poser des questions pertinentes sur son avenir. Après avoir montré que la radio s'est diffusée plus rapidement qu'Internet, on présentera successivement les choix techniques réalisés par les deux systèmes, les utopies originales, le rôle des amateurs et la stabilisation du modèle économique. Ce regard croisé permettra, en définitive, de voir Internet autrement, non pas comme la substitution d'un modèle marchand à un modèle universitaire et non-marchand mais comme un système profondément hétérogène qui progresse plus par diversification que par unification. It is worth studying the development of other technologies if we wish to identify really innovative elements in the Internet and ask relevant questions about its future. After showing that radio, born at the turn of the nineteenth century, spread more quickly than the Internet, the author presents the technical choices made by the two systems, their original Utopias, the role of amateurs in their development and the stabilization of their economic models. This comparative viewpoint helps us to see the Internet differently, not as the substitution of a market model for an academic and non-market model, but as a profoundly heterogeneous system that advances more through diversification than unification.
