Les Mourne Mountains, Irlande du Nord, offrent un bon exemple d'érosion différentielle à partir d'une surface ayant nivelé deux plutons tertiaires. Bien que le granite de ces deux plutons soit très comparable, il n'a pas résisté identiquement à la météorisation. The Mourne Mountains provide a good example of differential erosion among the granites of two tertiary plutons : the outer (coarse grained) granites form the highest hills, and the inner (fine grained) granites have been levelled by tertiary planation or shaped into large bassins. The granites in the two plutons are very similar, but resistance to weathering can be explained through the variations of rock structure : crystalline connections, open or cemented cracks in crystals, ..., etc. The variations of the joint density provide another explanation. Therefore the relations between the present landscape and the emplacement of the plutons must be analysed : cilled margins, drusy areas, internal contacts, and late stage features (aplitic intrusions into primary joints, and crushing in a wide area in the Eastern Mourne) are obvious in the mountain landscape.
