Cette contribution vise à convaincre de la nécessité d'une approche critique de la notion de limite. Nous montrons que celle-ci peut se comprendre selon trois conceptions – la limite comme seuil, la limite comme borne et enfin la limite comme frontière – et qu'il est nécessaire de les maintenir en tension. L'appel désormais récurrent au respect des limites se confond avec un rappel à l'ordre lorsque la conception de la limite comme borne domine les autres. Selon nous, retrouver le sens des limites ne peut être l'alibi d'un retour à un ordre autoritaire, cela nous engage plutôt à une composition éthique et politique entre les trois conceptions de la limite ; et ainsi à comprendre que la limite n'est pas simplement ce qui borne ou empêche mais aussi ce qui rend possible, c'est une condition de possibilité de la puissance d'agir. Les seuils se négocient, les bornes s'imposent, les frontières s'inventent, tel est le territoire sur lequel nous pensons possible de construire une pensée émancipatrice des limites. This contribution aims to convince to the need for a critical approach to the notion of limit. We show that it can be understood according to three conceptions—the limit as a threshold (“seuil”), the limit as a bound (“borne”) and the limit as a border (“frontière”)—and that it is necessary to keep them in tension. The call now recurrent to the respect of the limits is becoming confused with a call to order when the conception of the limit as a bound dominates the others. In our view, finding the sense of limits can not be the excuse for a return to an authoritarian order, it rather engages us in an ethical and political composition between the three conceptions of the limit; and thus invites us to understand that the limit is not simply that which restricts or prevents but also that which makes possible, it is a condition of possibility of the power to act. The thresholds are negotiated, the bounds are imposed, the frontiers are invented: this is the territory on which we think it possible to build an emancipatory thought of the limits.
