Cet article introduit un texte peu connu du sociologue algérien Abdelmalek Sayad, publié dans le journal étudiant Sorbonne(s) Nouvelles en 1989, intitulé « Algérie : les causes profondes du soulèvement d'octobre ». Traitant des protestations populaires d'octobre 1988, qui ont conduit à la crise du régime algérien et à l'ouverture du régime au pluralisme partisan, cette publication est remarquable, car elle constitue une des rares prises de position publiques du sociologue sur des faits d'actualité en Algérie. En partant des archives de l'article (version publiée et version manuscrite transmise au comité de rédaction), L'enjeu est de resituer l'histoire de cette publication et de saisir les origines biographiques d'une prise de position fortement critique du nationalisme et du gouvernement FLN. L'étude de cet article permet de réfléchir aux logiques d'engagement politique du chercheur, encore peu étudiées, Sayad s'étant appliqué à distinguer tout au long de sa carrière les sphères savante et militante. This article presents a little-known text by Algerian sociologist Abdelmalek Sayad, published in the student journal Sorbonne(s) Nouvelles in 1989 and titled “Algeria: the root causes of the October insurgency.” Dealing with the grassroots protests of October 1988 that led to the crisis of the Algerian regime and to its opening toward political pluralism, this publication is remarkable to the extent that it is one of Sayad's few public pronouncements about Algerian events. Using the archive pertaining to this text (the published version as well as the manuscript submitted to the editorial board), this article seeks to situate the history of this publication and to grasp the biographical basis of a position highly critical of nationalism and of the FLN government. The analysis of Sayad's text sheds light on the logic behind the political activism of the scholar – an under-researched subject since throughout his career, Sayad has strived to distinguish between the sphere of learning and that of political activism.
