Nabokov's visual acuity
Nabokov's "insatiable sight" determined to a great extent the unique place which the writer occupies in a European culture known for its ocularcentric tradition. Nabokov possessed an exceptional inborn visual acuity. This singular characteristic evolved and perfected itself due to Nabokov's study of art, and especially thanks to his drawing lessons with the celebrated Mstislav Dobužinskij who, by the writer's own admission, exerted considerable influence on both his literary work and his entomological studies. The latter, and specifically the study of the minutiae of butterfly structure under the microscope, left an indelible mark on Nabokov' s world perception. And in all the creative manifestations of this incomparable verbal artist, visual acuity always played a primary role. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
