Même si les thèmes de l'enfermement et du « correctionnaire » sont présents, voire
centraux dans l'Histoire de la folie, l'intérêt de Michel Foucault pour la prison en tant
que telle n'apparaît guère dans ses écrits avant 1971. Ce n'est pas sous la forme d'un
article ou d'une communication scientifique que cette nouvelle préoccupation émerge,
mais sous celle d'un manifeste co-signé par Jean-Marie Domenach et Pierre Vidal-Naquet : le manifeste du Groupe d'Information sur les Prisons. L'auteur suit à travers

Even if the themes of imprisonment and of « reformism » are present and even
central in Histoire de la folie (The history of insanity in the age of reason), Michel
Foucault's concern for prison as such, seldom appears in his writings prior to 1971.
This new concern does not emerge under the form of an article or a scientific communication, but with a manifest co-signed by Jean-Marie Domenach and Pierre Vidal-Naquet: the manifest of the Group of Information about Prisons. The auctor follows
