Au tournant du XIXe et du XXe siècles, l'artifice lumineux n'a pas définitivement
converti l'imaginaire de la nuit ; davantage encore, il a constitué en ressource touristique le thème de l'ambivalence de la ville, ce mythe que l'on aurait pu croire rendu
caduque par la modernisation urbaine, mais qui persiste comme si la démolition du
Paris des cloaques et de la misère n'avait pas réussi à balayer la noirceur légendaire
d'une ville pourtant dominée par les représentations du festif et du ludique. Affirmer
que la nuit abolie a peut-être fait naître un désir de ténèbres serait sans doute hasardeux ; mais elle n'a en tout cas pas fait disparaître de l'imaginaire social le thème de la
révélation souterraine et nocturne, en creux et en négatif, d'une duplicité de la ville dont
l'appréhension se trouve différée à un horaire compris entre 1 heure et 5 heures du

At the turn of the 20th century, the street-lighting artefact has not yet changed the
imaginary of the night; moreover, it turned into a touristic resource the theme of the
ambivalence of the night, that myth which one would have thought had been made
obsolete by urban modernisation, but which still persists as if the demolition of the
Paris of slums and misery had not succeeded in sweeping away the legendary darkness
of a town otherwise dominated by representations of carousing and playing. To state
that the abolition of the night has aroused a longing for darkness might be a bit rash;
but it hasn't eradicated from society's imagination the theme of the nocturnal and
underground revelation, inverted as a negative print, of the duplicity of a city which is
