La nuit est un domaine d'expression privilégié pour Jacques Tourneur, cinéaste
protéiforme, auteur de quelques films noirs mémorables, mais particulièrement inspiré
dans le domaine du fantastique. La nuit devient, dans The Leopard Man ou dans Night
of the Demon, l'occasion d'une confrontation tragique avec une altérité inquiétante ou,
parfois, d'un parcours initiatique. La mise en scène du nocturne joue des incertitudes
de la perception, du brouillage des limites, de la relation entre visible et invisible, silence et bruit, pour créer, non seulement un sentiment de malaise, d'horreur ou de terreur
mais pour suggérer l'existence d'une autre réalité en marge du monde connu, ou tapie

Night is a priviledged mode of expression for Jacques Tourneur, a protean film
maker, the autor of some memorable « films noirs », also quite inspired in the spere of
the fantastic. In such films as The Leopard Man or Night of the Demon, the night is the
occasion of a tragic confrontation with an uncanny Otherness, or leads sometimes to an
initiatic trip. The staging of the nocturnal plays upon the uncertainties of perception, the
blurring of limits, upon the relation between the visible and the invisible, between
sounds and silence, not only to convey a feeling of uneasiness, horror or terror, but also
to suggest the existence of a secondary reality, close to the frontiers of the familiar
